If your motorcycle has been in a garage or at least under a cover all winter, you’ll need to take some time to get your motorcycle back to peak riding shape. The engine might be sluggish, the brakes dusty, and shocks in need of some lubrication. This brief guide will help you get your bike back into shape so that your rides are safe and fun for as long as the sunshine lasts.

Take a Close Look

When you first pull your bike out of storage, you’ll need to take stock of everything and give every part a thorough visual inspection. Look for any rust or corrosion that may have developed, and check under the bike for leaks of oil, coolant, or brake fluid. Check for signs of pests, such as chewed-up upholstery (from mice) or any critters that could have taken up residence in a hidden corner of the chassis. Depending on your storage conditions, these things can pose serious problems to your riding experience.

Change the Oil

Changing the oil isn’t always essential, but it’s always necessary to at least check your oil when you de-winterize. Because your motorcycle hasn’t been running over the winter, there shouldn’t be much of a change in the quality of the oil. But it’s possible that condensation has formed in the oil pan, which could cause rust if left untreated. Look for water and oil separation on the dipstick when you remove it to check the oil. If you left dirty oil in your bike over the winter, make sure to clean that out.

Chassis

After checking the oil, it’s time to inspect the chassis. Take some lubricant and lube up any linkages or flex points, such as those that connect to the suspension. Look for any minor damage or even cracks that could be occurring along the weld lines. These probably wouldn’t have started over the winter, but it’s worth doing an annual check of your entire chassis to make sure you catch any damage early.

Always make sure to take the proper steps when bringing your motorcycle out of storage. You’ll extend the life of your motorcycle and give yourself more time to ride, as you’ll catch minor issues before they grow into major problems.
