Until you experience it yourself, it's easy to believe that you will never be a victim of motorcycle theft. Hopefully you're right, but there are a lot of people in the world who have no qualms with taking other people's possessions. For this reason, it's worth taking the extra precautions to keep your motorcycle as safe from theft as possible, and these tips should help. 1. Use Good Quality Locks and Chains

There are many times in life where looking for the best bargain makes sense, but motorcycle security typically isn't one of them. With security locks and chains, you tend to get what you pay for, and if you want your bike to be as secure as possible, invest in the higher-quality stuff. Some types of locks that tend to be good quality include steel U-locks, asymmetrical chains of 5/8 inch or more, and alarmed disc locks.

2. Use Several Locks

Quite a few thieves will probably know how to disarm a certain type of lock, but the odds are much lower that they'll know how to disarm many different types. In addition to the built-in lock that your bike should have, consider adding one or more other kinds. In most cases, any would-be thief won't be prepared to deal with multiple security obstacles.

3. Don't Keep Locks on the Ground

Whichever type of lock(s) you choose to use for your motorcycle, make a point to ensure that they aren't touching the ground. If they are, any potential thief will have a much better chance of having the proper leverage to break it, and just like that, your precious bike could be gone.

4. Park Somewhere Well Lit

Motorcycle thieves love relying on the cover of night to help them get away with their crimes. If you keep your bike parked somewhere that's always well-lit, there's a really good chance that any thief will think better of even trying to steal it, and just move on instead.

5. Install a Kill Switch

Many motorcyclists have some kind of switch installed on their bike which must be held down when the vehicle is started up, otherwise the engine won't work. This is a great way to make sure that even if a thief gets past your lock(s), they won't be able to simply ride off on your bike.

If your motorcycle is valuable to you, then it's certainly worth it to put in a little extra effort to keep it safe. To learn more, visit us at St. Charles Harley-Davidson in St. Charles, Missouri. We also serve St. Louis and St. Peters.
